Pet insurance for puppies:
how to compare plans
There’s no single best policy for every puppy. Here’s what regulators and vets say to compare, so you can read any quote with the right questions. We don’t rank providers and we haven’t bought these policies.

We read the sources listed at the bottom and turned their guidance into a checklist. We didn’t test any product, we don’t rank them, and we don’t publish ratings or prices: check those on the official sites. Last checked October 4, 2026.
The checklist.
- 1
Pick the plan type first
Pet insurance usually comes as accident-only, accident and illness, or wellness coverage, and each covers and excludes different things.

- 4
Check age limits
The NAIC white paper notes many carriers don’t cover pets younger than 8 weeks or older than 12 years when coverage starts.

- 6
Keep your own vet
AVMA supports policies that let you choose your own veterinarian, including specialists and emergency clinics.

Wellness plans aren’t insurance
The NAIC model act requires insurers to clearly separate non-insurance wellness programs from insurance policies.
